Kids: Strawberry Play Dough

Sophie loves playing with play dough, since our experiment with making mandarin play dough I have been wanting to give it another go with something else.  Today was that day.

Today we made strawberry play dough, not the type made out of jelly or kool-aid, the type made out of real strawberries!

What you will need:

  • Strawberries
  • Cutting board or plate
  • Knife
  • Nutribullet is what I used, you could use food processor, blender or even a potato masher.
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • Zip Lock Bag

What we did:

  1.  First thing I did was wash the strawberries and checked to make sure we didn’t have any rotten ones.

    Getting ready.

I then cut the tops off and cut them in half, I probably didn’t have to do that but if you use a potato masher the smaller you cut them the easier it will be.

Tops cut off and cut in half.

3.  I put the strawberries in the container to be blended, I didn’t add anything, just the strawberries.

Ready to be blended.

4.  Blend! I don’t have a set amount of time for this, I just did it until it had no lumps.

5. All ready to use.  move to the side for later.

Smooth and ready to use.

6.  Now to make the actual play dough.  The link below is to the recipe I used as a guide.  I used some of the measurements and due to adding strawberries and my assistant we improvised.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 tbs oil
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 drops liquid food colouring

Method

  • STEP 1Combine plain flour and salt.
  • STEP 2Add water, food colouring and oil. Mix until ingredients are combined.
  • STEP 3Knead well.
  • STEP 4If consistency is too wet add a little plain flour.

7.  Like the recipe says we combined 2 cups of plain flour and 1 cup of salt.  As soon as Sophie tipped it in her hands closely followed, she loved the feel of it, she kept running her fingers through it and smiling.

8.  The next step we added our strawberries, I then used the cup that had the strawberry mixture in and put about half a cup of water in it, mixed it around to get all the strawberries and poured it in.

This photo was taken after the water had been added.

While I was getting the water Sophie couldn’t help herself and in went her hand into the strawberry mixture.

Sophie loved the feel of the dry ingredients, she wasn’t a fan of the strawberries.

This was then closely followed by her wiping her hand on her shirt.

The writing on the shirt sums it up well!

9.  Next I had the oil ready to measure, Sophie kindly tipped the bottle up, So I am not sure how much oil went in but I don’t think it would have been too far off the right amount.  the recipe also says to add food colouring at this point.  I decided not to as I wanted to see if the strawberries created any colour.

10.  Since this looked to be a rather wet mixture I started off my mixing it with a spoon before using my hand to combine it all.  After a while I sprinkled flour on the bench tipped the mixture out and kneaded it.  I did have to add more flour, I imagine this was due to the strawberry/water ratio.

11.  Continue to knead until you have a play dough consistency.  I am excited to report that I never did add the food colouring, the strawberries made it a lovely pink colour.  I then used a zip lock bag to store it in and placed it in the fridge.  By the time I had finished kneading Sophie had decided that she just had to go outside.
